ROME — Italy’s government spent 30 million euro on a single painting this year, and the crowds now filing through Palazzo Barberini suggest the wager is working. The Portrait of Monsignor Maffeo Barberini, a Caravaggio completed around 1599, was acquired from private hands and shown publicly in Rome for the first time. For many, it’s a reason to visit Rome now.
