ROME — There are few rooms in the world that carry the weight of the Sala della Protomoteca. On March 25, 1957, six European nations signed the Treaties of Rome in this ceremonial hall at the Campidoglio, Rome’s civic seat on the Capitoline Hill,and gave birth to what eventually became the European Union. On March 25, 2026, exactly 69 years later, philosophers, writers, activists, and civic leaders filled the same room to ask what Europe should be by 2057, at the launch of a new annual international forum dedicated to the future of the European project.
